Mott 32 Singapore (卅二公馆) – Dim Sum Lunch at MBS

Mott 32 Singapore opened in Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands (MBS) at the later part of last year. Originating from Hong Kong, the award winning Mott 32 (卅二公馆) restaurant has outlets in other cities like Vancouver and Las Vegas. We had a simple dim sum lunch at Mott32 MBS Singapore recently.

According to the Mott 32 website, the name of the restaurant was inspired by the New York City address of first Chinese convenience store which opened in 1891. The store served as the nucleus for what is now a vibrant Chinatown in NYC.

Mott 32 Singapore is a stylish restaurant at the basement 1 level of MBS. The design of the Shoppes at MBS is such that sunlight enters even the lower levels of the shopping mall. The window side seats of the restaurants enjoy the natural light and are the nicest ones in the house.

Mott 32 Singapore Menu

The Mott 32 Singapore food menu is available online. Here are pictures of a few sample pages. There are some weekday set lunch options starting from $32++. It is quite a reasonable set lunch price for such a posh restaurant at MBS, but we did not try the set lunches that day.

We had heard about the top three things to eat at Mott 32 and wanted to try them. They are the Apple-Wood Roasted Peking Duck, Barbecue Pluma Iberico Pork Glazed with Yellow Mountain Honey, Iberico Pork with Soft Quail Egg and Black Truffle Siu Mai. Unfortunately the duck had to be ordered in advance and so we only had the chance to try the latter two plus a few other types of dim sum.

The Char Siew

The Barbecue Pluma Iberico Pork Glazed with Yellow Mountain Honey ($48, picture below) lived up to its reputation. This was the finest char siew I can remember eating. Its texture was more like a well-aged ribeye that has been cooked medium rare. Soft, almost melt-in-your-mouth, on the inside with a crusty, charred at some parts exterior. It was neither fatty nor have any porky taste. The portion was quite large, something like a 200g+ steak. Best to be shared by two persons.

The Dim Sum

The other highlight of our meal at Mott 32 Singapore was the Soft Quail Egg and Black Truffle Siu Mai ($9 for a basket of two pieces). Truffle and egg is a classic flavour combination and Mott has successfully created this in a bite-sized package. A quail eye with runny yolk is concealed in this siu mai. The whole thing should be eaten in one go – to avoid creating a mess with the egg and also to taste everything together. It is very good.

The rest of the dim sum that we tried that day can be described as interesting and average. The two interesting ones were the Signature Crispy Sugar Coated Peking Duck Bun ($10 for a basket of three pieces, picture above) and the South Australian Scallop, Prawn, Hot & Sour
Shanghainese Soup Dumplings ($10 for a basket of four, picture below). Both of them looked beautiful and tasted good. The duck bun reminded us of char siew bolo bao, but with duck substituting the char siew as a filling. The hot and sour xiao long bao looked very beautiful. But instead of the usual chicken broth inside, it contains a sour and spicy hot soup.

The more normal dim sum items that day were the steamed shrimp dumplings (har gow, $10) and pan-fried turnip cake ($12, picture below). These looked like the products found at other dim sum restaurants but the taste was above average.
