Well, I could easily save more than US$120 for a year’s subscription to the two publications.

The NLB Mobile app comes allows you to:
- Read e-books and listen to audiobooks
- Access e-magazines and e-newspapers (both local and international)
- Attend online courses
For instance, through the NLB Mobile app, you have access to over 7,000 current e-newspapers and e-magazines from local and international publishers.
If you are a knowledge junkie, the app will become your companion in no time!
And the best part is, they are all FREE!
A Dive Into the Various Functions Available on the NLB Mobile App
Before you can use any of the functions, you have to:
1) Own a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet with internet connection
2) Have an NLB myLibrary ID and
3) Download and sign-in to the NLB Mobile app
E-Books and Audiobooks
Through the NLB Mobile app, you can get access to over 500,00 titles, be it in e-book or audiobook format.
To access this function, you have to:
1. Sign in to the NLB Mobile app using your myLibrary ID.
2. Once you’ve signed in, click on the “Search” button at the bottom.
3. Search for the book you wish to read in the search box.
4. Click on the book’s title if it’s available.
5. Click on “Borrow” and “Yes” when prompted to borrow the e-book.
6. You can choose to read it online or download it.
If you wish to download it, you will be prompted to download the Libby app and login using your NLB myLibrary ID.
7. Viola! The e-book is at your disposal for 21 days.
You can borrow up to 16 e-books and audiobooks.
E-Magazines (Local and International) and International E-Newspapers
The NLB Mobile app lets pour through more than 7,000 leading publications from over 100 countries.
To access this function, you have to:
1. Sign in to the NLB Mobile app using your myLibrary ID.
2. Click on the “eNewspapers & eMagazines” button at the middle of the screen.
2. You will then be prompted to download the PressReader app, an international digital newsstand,
3. Once you download the app, you can get complimentary access (also known as “Sponsored Access”) to the local and international publications.
The sponsored access is for an hour only.
However, once the hour is up, you can re-launch PressReader from the NLB Mobile app to get free access again.
Local E-Newspapers
On top of international e-newspapers, you can get access to eight local newspapers such as The Straits Times, The Business Times, Lianhe Zaobao, Berita Harian, and Tamil Murasu through the NLB Mobile app.
To access this function, you have to:
1. Sign in to the NLB Mobile app using your myLibrary ID.
2. Click on the “SPH Newspapers” button at the middle of the screen.
3. You will then be directed to another page for free access to the local newspapers.
4. From there, you can choose the title of the newspaper you want to read.
5. Enjoy with your morning coffee!
Online Courses
For all you course junkies out there, NLB Mobile app provides over 8,000 courses with more than 250,000 video tutorials via LyndaLibrary.
To access this function, you have to:
1. Sign in to the NLB Mobile app using your myLibrary ID.
2. Click on the “eLearning” button at the middle of the screen.
3. You will then be directed to Lynda.com to create a new Lynda profile.
4. Once you have done that, you can access the thousands of courses on Lynda.
Including how to be a Python developer (something I’ve been wanting to learn)!
You can also access Lynda via your computer. To do that, head over to lynda.com and click on “Sign In” at the top right.
Click on “Sign in with your organization portal”.
Type in “www.nlb.gov.sg” and click on “Continue”.
Login using your NLB myLibraryID.
Create a new Lynda profile, and you are in!
How Much Can You Possibly Save From Using the NLB Mobile App?
Taking into consideration that you can gain tons of content from e-newspapers to online courses, this app is really valuable.
Let’s check out how much those subscriptions available via the NLB Mobile app would cost if you were to subscribe individually to the different content.
We will be assuming an individual subscribes to the following:
- 1 e-magazine (Bloomberg Businessweek)
- 1 international e-newspaper (The Washington Post)
- 1 local e-newspaper (The Straits Times)
- Lynda.com
We are also taking the basic packages available for customers.
Bloomberg Businessweek costs US$99 for 50 issues while The Washington Post costs US$29 for a year. These add up to US$128 or around S$176 per year.
As for the local newspaper, a basic digital individual access for The Straits Times costs S$14.90 per month, which totals up to S$178.80 per year.
One year’s worth of subscription to Lynda.com costs around S$25 per month or a yearly cost of S$300.
