More and more Singaporeans are disgusted and rejecting old politics, says SDP’s Damanhuri Bin Abas

The old politics are making more and more Singaporeans disgusted and rejecting it, said Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) member Damanhuri Bin Abas in a Facebook post on Tuesday (21 July).

“Yet there are still stubborn double standards that still refuse to go away as the old politics shun reform for their vested interest,” he added.

Mr Damanhuri, who contested in Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC in GE2020, asserted that the People’s Action Party (PAP) must “rise and overrule its own remnants of the past” to avert becoming obsolete.

“It will only has itself to blame should this happen, as the traditional voting base will eventually go away,” he noted.

Mr Damanhuri went on to say that the PAP’s reliance on having new citizens to replace the traditional base will be a “double-edged sword” just like the Group Representation Constituency (GRC) system.

“Studies on similar scenarios in other countries show that new citizens will vote incumbent for at least 2-3 cycles of elections, once they wisen up and realise they are just as screwed as all of us, they will change or leave,” he explained.

Mr Damanhuri then highlighted that most Singaporeans born here will still “have the final say” as they will remain here no matter what happens, adding that they have nowhere else to go unlike the new folks.

“It may take a while but eventually it will happen as the universal order that governs all things ensures balance. It’s not rocket science, it is the cycle of life,” he remarked.
