Retired SAF veteran military dogs are in search for a new home; adoption drive from 20 July to 14 August

A total of 19 retired dog from the Singapore Armed Forces Military Working Dog Unit (SAF MWDU) are now up for adoption as they seek a new place to be called home.

These dogs are part of the unit’s annual adoption drive that is set up to help find these canine a loving home to spend the remaining years of their lives.

“These SAF veteran dogs have ‘ORD’-ed and are looking for a loving new home to spend the rest of their lives in! From guarding military installations to sniffing out explosives and narcotics, they have served Singapore with distinction,” the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said in a Facebook.

It added, “The time has come for these canine soldiers to enjoy their golden years.”

MINDEF also revealed in the post that this year’s adoption drive will happen from 20 July to 14 August 2020.

If you’re interested in making them part of your family, you can find out more in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and fill up the application form below. For further queries, you can contact the Adoption Team at [email protected].

If that’s not all, to ensure that these fur babies are ready to be placed in a new home, they have all went through regular health checks, which include annual vaccination, routine heartworm and parasite prevention programme, as well as basic obedience training.

As for dogs that fail to find a new home, MWDU assured that its unit will “continue to take full care” of these retired veteran military dogs.

Some of the breeds that are up for adoption this year include German Shepherd, Springer Spaniel, Labrador Retriever and Belgian Malinois. All these dogs are also HDB-approved.

However, some dogs cannot be adopted by HDB household as they are not breeds approved by the HDB. The exception applies to six out of the 19 dogs which can be adopted by HDB households under Project ADORE.

For those who are not aware of Project ADORE, it is a programme that was launched in 2012, and it allows dog handles, who may be HDB dwellers, to adopt their retired service dogs.

These apply to dog handlers who have served with the Singapore Police Force, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) K-9 unit as well as the SAF MWDU.

Two years ago, the programme expanded to include all HDB dwellers in Singapore. In this one-year scheme, HDB dwellers are permitted to adopt larger dogs that do not fit NParks criteria for HDB-approved dogs
