Hua Hua Eating House in Block 81 Marine Parade Central is a fairly typical coffeeshop in a HDB estate – but one with a surprisingly interesting collection of hawker stalls – from popular popiah to North Indian cuisine.
Hua Hua Eating House is located in a strategic location in Marine Parade – a few doors from the post office and a few minutes walk away from the polyclinic, supermarket and banks. It enjoyed its 15 minutes of fame in 2018 when photos were circulated showing customers enjoying their food nonchalantly in the coffeeshop even when it was flooded (see Patrons remain chill even as Marine Parade coffee shop gets flooded with ankle-deep water – by Coconuts Singapore).
It looked like a nondescript coffeeshop but has an interesting collection of stalls including the famous Bao Bao Popiah and the popular Masala Tandoor and Someset Wantan Mee.
Bao Bao Popiah
Bao Bao Popiah traced its history back to a small stall in Clifford Pier in 1960s. It has a loyal following and continues to serve up authentic traditional crispy popiah ($1.70 per roll) and delectable kueh pie tee ($3.50 for 5).
Bao Bao Popiah in Hua Hua Eating House may be serving old school popiah but it has also kept up with the times. It caters for DIY popiah party at home and also has made online ordering possible.
Somerset Wantan Mee
Somerset Wantan Mee serves wanton noodles ($3) with boiled dumplings and fried dumplings. The portion size is generous. It is really cheap and good food.
Masala Tandoor
Masala Tandoor is like a full fledged North Indian restaurant. It has an extensive menu offering tandoori chicken, fish tikka, biryani, chapati, naan, roti prata and more. There is even a Vegetarian Chapati Set ($5.50) that is endorsed by the Health Promotion Board (HPB).
Rashid, the owner Masala Tandoor, was a cook in fine-dining North Indian restaurants before he opened his stall in Marine Parade.
His naan, biyani, mutton curry and chicken tikka are among the most popular items. Masala Tandoor in Hua Hua Eating House is a nice find for those looking for cheap and good North Indian food in the East. Home delivery services are available.

Katong (Jago) Teochew Mee Pok Kway Teow Mee
Katong (Jago) Teochew Mee Pok Kway Teow Mee has a very long name. We guess it is important for them to refer to where they came from – the coffeeshop in Jago Close (see Brunch at Brunners Coffeeshop Katong Jago Close).
The name also tells you what they sell – Teochew minced meat noodles and kway teow soup (starting from $4). It also has laksa and prawn noodles.
Ming Chin Imperial Kitchen
Ming Chin Imperial Kitchen may sound too grandiose for a zhi char stall in a coffeeshop. However, if you have gone to one of the food delivery platforms, like foodpanda or Deliver.sg, to order dishes to enjoy at home you may never realise that the food came from a zhi char outlet in Hua Hua Eating House. The stall has a nice name and nice logo and its menu offers a wide range of items – including yam ring, Mongolian beef, drunken chicken pot, curry fish head and cereal prawns. You get restaurant quality dishes at reasonable prices. We have tried their one dish meals, such as hor fun, and enjoyed them.
More Stalls in Hua Hua Eating House
For a coffeshop, Hua Hua Eating House offers surprising variety. There is of course the beverage stall, which also sells snacks like chwee kueh and nyonya kuehs.
There are also a stall selling porridge and a separate stall for Teochew fish soup and porridge.
Hua Hua Eating House is also home to a popular bao stall and an economic rice stall. Vegetarians will be happy to find a Vegetarian Food stall as well as vegetarian rojak from the rojak stall.
Whether you want a quick snack, a simple one dish meal or an imperial feast, there will be something for you at Hua Hua Eating House. There is a good variety of dishes and the food is not bad. Afterall, residents were known to have treated even rising flood water with total indifference while enjoying their food in this Marine Parade eatery. The coffeeshop in Block 81 Marine Parade Central must be a hidden gem.
