Turning crisis into opportunity: Learn, share and experiment

In his new book, Laurence Smith charts the top 10 things leaders should do to turn crisis into opportunity.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to reshape the world of work, companies are having to face unprecedented uncertainty and ambiguity. How then, can they turn this into an opportunity to be better prepared for whatever is coming up next?

Start by engaging and developing employees, thus helping the whole organisation be better prepared to compete in the post COVID-19 world, suggested Laurence Smith, Chartered Fellow CIPD, and a thought leader in digital mindset and transformation.

He elaborated, “In your organisation, you can implement what I call LSE Cycles, standing for Learn, Share and Experiment. This is an accelerated methodology by which an organisation can quickly get up to speed on the potential impact and opportunity offered by emerging technologies, as well as increase the knowledge and awareness of the organisation.

“Done right, you are likely to also get some new incremental, and sometimes exponential, impact and learning.”

Believing that some employees are simply under-utilised, Smith emphasised the engagement of these employees in learning, sharing and experimenting on new ways to solve customers’ problems, innovate products and accelerate an organisational path to digital literacy and agility.

In his new book, Transformation Mindset: 10 Things Leaders should be Doing Today to turn Crisis into Opportunity, Smith also recommended companies to pay attention to 3Ds:

  • Dematerialise, which represents the dramatic impact when products go from physical to digital and can be reproduced, distributed and shared, at zero marginal cost.
  • Demonetise, which asks the question of what has happened to those apps on your smartphone, and the fact that they are all now available for free.
  • Democratise, which explains how billions more people now have access to all the world’s knowledge.
