At Dior, Rare Flowers Get The High-Tech Beauty Treatment

Dior Science – the research and development arm of Parfums Christian Dior – has always pioneered the use of high-tech innovations and combined it with the benefits of flowers to create its iconic skincare ranges, adopting a science meets nature approach.

The house has invested years in researching – and even growing – different flowers to find the ones that are best suited for the needs of its consumers. It carefully treats and harvests the flowers to obtain the extracts in its optimal form, which are then teamed with next-level technologies to form advanced formulations that aim to repair, regenerate and nourish complexions. Here, we venture into the brand’s gardens and get a closer look at how the cultivated blooms shape some of the brand’s most iconic collections.

Rose de Granville Garden
These precious roses are harvested in a garden in the Loire Valleyonce a year during autumn and just before the break of dawn. The timing is said to be when the flowers contain the strongest concentrations of phyto-nutrients, sugars, calcium and potassium, which are of much importance to treat damaged skins.

The Rose de Granville is reportedly the first rose ever created in cosmetics after seven generations of cross-breeding and was chosen from among 40,000 hybrids. This tedious process was necessary for the French brand to find an optimum and ideal flower that could be used in its formulations.

Dior’s garden boasts 4,000 Granville rose bushes, which are dedicated to Dior Prestige’s iconic Rose de Granville, with each flower containing 22 different micro-nutrients. The flowers in the garden are grown in an eco-responsible manner, banning the usage of chemical pesticides to fight off naturally present pests, favouring the use of ladybugs instead.  Dior Prestige Le Micro-Caviar De Rose, $550
What It Does: This intensive treatment targets three specific deficiencies of fatigued skin: potassium, responsible for cellular metabolism energy; omegas, which treat micro-fissures and sagging skin; and ceramides for cellular cohesion and a healthy skin barrier function. The Rose de Granville contains potassium, omega-3, 6 and 9 fatty acids and manganese to treat all three deficiencies for healthier and strengthened skin.

Tech #1: To transform the precious natural ingredient of Rose de Granville to restore and regenerate skin, Dior Science introduced a one-of-a-kind micro-encapsulation technology. Slow-time microfluidics fuse the oily phase of the solution with an extremely rich aqueous gel. These are formed slowly until the thousands of pearls gradually spread over the gel until they form a luxurious caviar texture. These precious and fragile pearls are stabilised at the very last moment, inside the jar, in order to preserve the indulgent texture.

Tech #2: A double-extraction process is also used to obtain the full reparative powers of the Rose de Granville. First, a cryoextraction is used to obtain the hydro-soluble molecules while rose oil, a lipo-soluble element, is obtained via microwave and ultrasound techniques. Second, a thermo-extraction process is introduced to restore the powers of rosehip. The process starts by gradually increasing the temperature to allow the rigid structures to dissolve slowly and ultimately, release a precious elixir infused with micro-nutrients.  Logonza Garden
The flowers grown in the garden, which is nestled in Madagascar, is known as the “flower of eternity” as it is reportedly capable of growing indefinitely even in harsh climates and environments such as severe fires.

The flower boasts regenerative properties and is a signature ingredient in all products in the Capture Totale range since its inception. The flowers are harvested once a year in November (according to local traditions, this is said to be the best time to harvest flowers that are respectful to nature). Each is delicately hand-picked to obtain the precious seeds that are then dried in the open air under the sun.  Dior Capture Totale Firming & Wrinkle-Correcting Creme, $200
What It Does: A bio-fermented ceramide with plumping properties restores the skin‘s barrier function while natural vegetable oils, which are rich in omega 3, 6 and 9 and fatty acids, nourish and soften. The creme also works on all levels of the dermis to restore it, resulting in diminished lines and wrinkles, and an overall more radiant and plump complexion.

Tech #1: A Capture Totale C.E.L.L. Energy Technology works to restore the regenerative powers of skin stem cells. These cells represent only 0.2 per cent of our skin cells but are extremely valuable as a single stem cell can help generate millions of new cells. These can then help the skin heal quicker and regenerate faster to prevent signs of ageing while strengthening the overall health of skin cells. The technology is made up of a floral complex of Madagascan longoza, Chinese peony, white lily and Chinese jasmine, which are said to nourish and strengthen stem cells to allow for quicker healing and correct visible signs of ageing.

Tech #2: Lipo-3x is an assimilation vector (in other words, a transport system) that guides the ingredients and transports them deep into the skin for it to work effectively. It does so by reactivating the six vital functions for healthier skin: energy, regeneration, self-repair, healing, cell production and strengthening. Chateau D’Yquem Garden
The garden is located in Chateau D’Yquem near Bordeaux – which delivers some of the world’s most exquisite wines. Here, Dior extracts a type of mould usually found on grapes and vine sap as ingredients for the uber-luxurious L’Or de Vie skincare range. Dior L’Or de Vie Le Serum, $940
What It Does: Damaged skin needs to be repaired and this new luxurious serum does exactly that by harnessing the benefits of yquem botrytis cinerea, a precious living micro-organism that is said to be packed with antioxidants, as well as regenerative and healing properties.

Tech #1: To obtain the full benefits of the yquem botrytis cinerea, an active yquem ferment is developed through a Bio-Fermentation Process. The botrytis cinerea cells are placed in a bio-reactor, which enables the natural synthesis of a polysaccharide gel concentrated in precious (1-3) beta glucans.
