Don’t let these problems ruin the perfect wedding you’ve always dreamed of.

You may have learned how to deal with some common wedding day problems by talking to experienced brides before you and have taken the necessary precautions to protect your big day from being ruined by them, but even the most meticulous planning will have cracks that you might not be aware of.

Let us help you further perfect-proof your wedding from these unknown cracks with our list of eight unexpected problems you might encounter in the days leading up to your wedding and during the big day.

1. You don’t know how to tell your boss and colleagues that they’re not invited to your wedding

Your wedding is going to be the cosy, intimate affair with family and friends that you’ve always wanted, and that means you won’t be inviting your boss and co-workers to your nuptials. But you’re worried that they might expect an invitation upon your wedding announcement and take things personally when you don’t hand them one.

If you don’t plan to invite your boss and colleagues at the get-go, then don’t feel obligated to by the thought that they might expect to be invited. Make it known from the start that your wedding is going to be a cosy affair limited to family and close friends only so you don’t give them any false expectations or hurt their feelings. You should also refrain from discussing your wedding at work to avoid any negative feelings that may develop.

2. Your bridesmaids can’t afford to pay to be part of your wedding

Your wedding vision may include an extravagant bachelorette party in a private villa in Bali and your girls in a lavish outfit that they will only wear once to your wedding, but that doesn’t mean your bridesmaids will be able to afford all of that. Chances are, they are likely to complain about the price that they have to pay to be part of your wedding vision.

You have to remember that the wedding is your once-in-a-lifetime, not your bridesmaids’. So, don’t expect them to fork out a large sum of money just for that one day. Be a reasonable and understanding bride to your girls and choose an affordable bachelorette party or bridesmaid’s dress for them. If you have your sights set on an overseas party or an expensive dress, then offer to pay for half or all of the expenses instead of making them pay.

3. You still have guests who have yet to RSVP to you and your wedding is two days away!

The nerve-wrecking thing about planning a wedding is not knowing if your guests will turn up or not. Although 95% of the guests who’ve RSVP-ed to say that they are coming to the wedding, there will be one or two who doesn’t turn up on the day itself. Similarly, there will be those who did not confirm their attendance and turn up at the last minute.

Whether you are dealing with no-shows or extra guests who just pop up without notice, never assume that they are coming or not coming to your wedding. You should always follow up with them to check if they are planning to attend your celebration or not, even if it is just hours before your wedding commences.

In the event that you are not able to get in touch with said guests, always err on the side of caution and include them in your final head count. It’s always better to have extra seats and food than to have them turn up at the last minute and find themselves without a seat or food.

4. You Have Guests Making Inappropriate Toasts at Your Wedding

Celebratory toasts are part and parcel of every wedding. It adds joy to the celebration, that is, until someone delivers an inappropriate toast or hogs the microphone during the traditional Yum-seng toast.

To prevent these scenarios from happening, leave specific instructions to your maid-of-honour, best man or emcee that they should not hand the microphone over to any other guest unless they are one of the people who is supposed to deliver a speech.

5. You’re not sure if you are supposed to provide meals for your wedding vendors

Your wedding vendors are working hard to make sure that you get the dream wedding you’ve always wanted, so do count them in if you are catering any food for your big day, even if they say you don’t need to. Delegate a member from your bridal party to check on your vendors periodically to make sure that they know that food and drinks are available for them if they wish to eat or drink.

6. You don’t know how to craft a menu that is suitable for every guest at your wedding

Let’s face it, as much as you would like to take every single one of your guest’s dietary needs and preferences into account when you are planning your wedding menu, it is practically impossible to do so. You can, however, try to cater to basic dietary preferences such as vegetarian or non-beef preferences.

Request for your guests to indicate if they need a vegetarian or non-beef option in their RSVP to help you plan your wedding menu. When in doubt, always offer basic meat options such as fish or chicken, and request for your venue to cater a vegetarian alternative for guests with a vegetarian diet.

7. You are not sure of what to do for your Guo Da Li ceremony or tea ceremony

Once you announce that you’re getting married, you’ll be expected to carry out certain Chinese wedding traditions such as the Guo Da Li ceremony and tea ceremony to bless the union. Since these traditions are passed down by word of mouth from generations before you, you may not know what you are required to do for these ceremonies, especially if your parents are equally unsure.

You can consult an elder in your family – a married aunt or grandmother – to find out what you need to do or you can look through our guides on the Guo Da Li ceremony, tea ceremony and other Chinese wedding traditions to learn what you need for your wedding.

8. You have a spouse who does not care for the Chinese Wedding Traditions

You may not necessarily believe that practicing the Chinese wedding traditions will make your marriage blissful and eternal, but you do it anyway to give the elders in your family a peace of mind. After all, there’s nothing to lose and blessings to gain by doing it. However, your fiancé feels differently and is reluctant to include these traditions into your wedding or not.

Have a talk with your fiancé to find out why he’s feeling that way and try your best to address his concerns. If he is reluctant to incur the unnecessary costs needed to prepare for the various Chinese wedding traditions, then find ways to re-use the items required for the various ceremonies or look for cheaper alternatives. Explain to him why it is important to you or your family to include these traditions into your wedding and come to a decision that both of you are happy with.
