AIA Healthy Street Eats: Chef Jeremy Pang’s recipes for healthier hawker food!

I had the privilege of hosting UK celebrity chef Jeremy Pang last year during his trip across Asia. He has teamed up with AIA to explore local street food across Asia and  then to come up with healthier versions of the dish.

Just because you want to live a healthier, longer and better life doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice your tastebuds.  A “healthy foodie” isn’t an oxymoron, but it does mean that you have to be mindful about what you eat.   You can certainly re-create all our beloved hawker favourites at home and, with a few tweaks, transform them into healthier versions which you can enjoy with your family and friends!  This is even more relevant now that we are all encouraged to stay at home instead of venturing outdoors!

I brought Jeremy to Maxwell road food centre where he was introduced to the Fuzhou Oyster Cake.  This deep fried snack is one of the tastiest things on the planet, but it is the quintessential “cheat day” dish of anyone on a diet.  I guess I was being a tad facetious, but I surely wasn’t going to hand him something on a silver platter.   Then we made our way to Gold Mile Food Centre where he was really drawn to fried Hokkien Mee!  We did try other stuff as well like Sup Tulang, chicken rice, Hainanese curry rice and  ngor hiang, but when he returned to his kitchen in the UK, he managed to come up with healther version of these two dishes.  You can find his recipes, and other recipes from across Asia on AIA’s series on healthy food swaps website.
