Collect Miles and Explore Staycations While Waiting To Travel In 2021


I am a noob when it comes to credit cards – I was using the Amex rewards card for the longest time because some telemarketer recommended it to me.

It was until I came across MileLion.com that I realised I could have gotten more mileage from my expenses, just by using the right credit cards.

That was where I learn about combining the DBS Altitude for offline purchases and DBS Woman’s for online spending (yes, a guy can apply for woman’s card). Now, I probably earn an airline ticket at least 3 times faster than I would previously been able to.

I know not everyone is keen to spend time to read fine prints and compare credit card deals. MileLion covers this space – the site analyses the deals and makes it easier for you to make a decision. Just read their articles and make your decision. The effort is well worth the potential rewards – don’t let your expenses go to waste.

That said, MileLion covers more than credit cards.

Its true value is in travel hacking – how regular folks can fly first class and stay in luxury hotels without having to pay cash upfront…if you know how to optimise your credit card strategy and loyalty programs with airlines and hotels.

I got the privilege to speak to Aaron Wong, the founder of MileLion, in this episode of Bid and Ask.

It was particularly interesting to have him share his thoughts about the travel industry after Covid-19 dealt a heavy blow to it.

Here’s the full interview, I share my biggest takeaways below too:

My takeaways

Continue with your miles strategy even if you can’t travel now

I belong to the miles camp but lately I find myself leaning towards the use of my cashback credit card. I just wasn’t sure if it still makes sense to collect miles now, since I can’t travel in the near future.

Aaron is confident that the travel industry will return and he expects it to be around mid-2021. His argument was that the travel industry can’t survive beyond that, especially for countries that rely heavily on tourism. Airlines are big employers who need to earn revenue and pay their staff. In fact, if travel cannot resume by mid-2021, he believes airlines may have to shut down.

We will get to use the miles for travel eventually and it makes sense to optimise our expenses by accumulating miles in the meantime.

You might want to use credit cards that rewards online spending

The only change to Aaron’s miles strategy is to use focus on cards that rewards more for online spending. This is valid if you find yourself buying things online more often than you did before Covid-19.

Personally, I use the DBS Woman’s card exclusively for online purchases. Aaron also suggested Citi Rewards and HSBC Revolution cards which offer 4 miles per dollar for the first S$1,000 spend per month. Compared this to other cards that typically offer 1.2 miles per dollar, you will be wasting 2.8 miles per dollar!

But… what if the airlines don’t survive?

You may be concerned about airlines going bust or the miles expiring before you get to use them or even face miles devaluation.

Aaron is confident that some airlines would be able to tide through this period. He cited Singapore Airlines (SIA) as an example. He was reassured when the Singapore government had the resolve to rescue the national airline and believed it would be one of the survivors in the airline industry. However, he wasn’t sure about other airlines such as Virgin Atlantic.

To reduce the risk of losing miles, Aaron also prefers to look at cards with more transfer partners. An example would be Citibank which has 11 different airlines to transfer to, this option would come in handy in case any airlines go under.

He also quoted KrisFlyer as an example whereby expiring miles were renewed for another 6 months because SIA understands that it is not possible to redeem them for any flights at this point in time. I shouldn’t worry as a KrisFlyer member! He added that you can have the option to use cards that offer longer points validity such as Citibank with 5 years or HSBC with 37 months. Unfortunately DBS Woman’s card only has 1 year of points validity.

On possible miles devaluation, Aaron acknowledges that is a fact of life. But he is optimistic that it wouldn’t happen soon because of the lack of demand for seats.

In the current situation, the ‘miles seats’ are no longer competing with the ‘revenue seats’ and hence airlines are not desperately thinking of ways to devalue the miles.

You can still do staycations!

It was good to see MileLion switching its focus to cover staycations since we can’t travel out of the country. Aaron has been reviewing his stays in a handful hotels of various tiers. A member in the audience even recommended reading his review on Hotel 81 for entertainment.

When asked for recommendations on where could I bring my kids for staycation, he suggested Shangri-La which has kidzone facilities, The Fullerton Hotel which provides a tent for kids or Yotel (Orchard) where kids can interact with robots.

Conclusion

Travel has halted for the time being but it’ll be back eventually. Miles strategy is still pretty much valid today as much as it was pre-Covid. You can consider staycations if you need to get out of the house badly.

Mukbang Livestreams To Promote F&B Businesses In M’sia


Have you ever gone online to look up what food a restaurant serves, or wanted to order takeout but couldn’t find their menus online? Even worse when you manage to find it, only to realise it’s outdated.

That’s a problem MM Meal is trying to solve.

It’s a locally developed online platform for restaurants to digitise their menu so customers can view, order and pay for their food to be prepared for them.

Similar to Grab, it handles the end-to-end transactions of ordering and payments for merchants and customers.

Behind this platform are entrepreneurs Melissa and Stephanie Lee.

During the MCO, Melissa, who manages the platform and helps merchants grow their businesses, realised that many F&B businesses were struggling.

So, she came up with a way to increase the sales and brand awareness of their merchants with immediate results, using Facebook’s livestreaming feature.

A Small Compromise For Merchants To Make

Thus, MM Meal Live was launched as a value-added service on Facebook in May 2020. 

To be featured, the only things merchants have to do is send Melissa their signature best-tasting dishes and sponsor at least 2 meals for giveaways at the end of the livestreams.

Selling this way provides both her merchants and their customers with immediate value.

Melissa described, “Customers get to view and understand the product better and will be able to make immediate decisions to purchase, with this it is able to help merchants to close sales faster.”

The limited-time offers given out during the livestreams come in the form of discount codes that only last for 5 hours upon mention.

According to Melissa, it’s a special price that customers won’t be able to get anywhere else. 

A link will be provided during and after the livestreams for customers to order their meals, and those orders will then be sent to merchants for preparation and delivery.

Feasting To Sell

Every Wednesday at 5:30PM, Melissa will go live on Facebook in a mukbang video to eat and review the food products from merchants on MM Meal.

During this is when the limited time offers and free meals are given out to audiences who tune in.

As for why the livestreams happen at such a specific time, she explained, “We are trying to target an audience that is still deciding what to have for dinner, and also for them to order their meal for the next day, as we do provide advance pre-ordering.”

Doing mukbang livestreams retains the audience’s attention as opposed to merely promoting the product alone, Melissa said.

Mukbang videos essentially feature a person eating large quantities of food in front of a camera while interacting with audiences. It became popular in South Korea in 2010, and has since become a worldwide trend.

Because MM Meal’s livestreams are conducted in Mandarin, you’d think certain demographics in Malaysia would be left out. But Melissa doesn’t necessarily see it that way.

“Livestream selling originated in China’s Dou Yin and Taobao, hence the culture was picked up by the Chinese in Malaysia first,” she said. 

She also explained that this group tended to be more impulsive with their spending habits.

“We realised that English speakers are more facts-driven and they like to read and research about something before they make a decision to buy, unless they know the brand pretty well,” she said.

On the other hand, similar to the Chinese demographic, she said, “Malays will definitely be a big market, which we are currently trying to explore by working with other livestreaming hosts too.”

Balancing A Day Job & MM Meal Live

The team had to switch their focus when the lockdown was lifted so that Melissa could balance doing this service with her day job.

“I was supposed to do it every day to start with, but as MCO ended, my day job started to get busy, we then changed to have it every Wednesday only and to focus on our own merchants.”

During the MCO, Melissa was also doing livestreams for other restaurants that weren’t MM Meal’s merchants, selling products like snacks, biscuits, and beauty products.

Getting the viewership she has now didn’t come easy. When they first started, Melissa told us that they only had 1 to 10 views each time, which were demotivating and made her want to give up.

“I guess the key is to be consistent and to be very clear on your goal and objective, as ours is to help our merchant to increase sales especially during this pandemic,” she advised.

Now, their livestreams are able to attract an average of 3,000 to 5,000 viewers per video, and each live session can draw 5 to 10 orders within the first hour of their promotions.

Depending on the product and its price, she’s sometimes even managed to bring in 30-40 orders during the livestream.

Melissa added that MM Meal Live’s audience has also built a certain trust with her in providing honest feedback on the food she’s trying in the videos, and are thus more likely to trust the merchants as well.

Even after sales pick up for their current merchants, MM Meal will continue growing its livestreams and ordering platform, building an ecosystem for it one day.

“We see an opportunity for livestreaming and it is more acceptable to more people, especially with what has happened over these months,” Melissa said.

At the same time, the team is looking at expanding their services to other products and services outside of F&B, as they see that a market for those too.

This gay founder is creating a safe media platform for LGBTQ community in SEA



It is 2020 but the fighting of the LGBTQ community continues the world over.  Take any industry, the community is still grossly underrepresented. Tech industry is no different either; their overall condition is yet to progress into a more inclusive nature.

As our recent oped pointed out, the society — even in places such as Silicon Valley — is yet to achieve LGBTQ inclusion. If this can happen in a country where its previous government had shown support for this community, just imagine the plight of the community in Asia, particularly Southeast Asia, where religions and traditional beliefs are often mixed and sway one’s judgment.

The domino effect

e27 got a chance to talk to Jay Lin, a gay entrepreneur based in Taiwan whose company Portico Media is focussing on LGBTQ-inclusive contents. Lin was one of the headliners of Startup Impact Summit’s “LGBTI – Why it matters for Impact and Sustainability” session.

Lin grew up in Taiwan before moving to the US when he was 10 years old. He then pursued higher education in a law school in the Bay Area, where he realised that storytelling in a media platform is something that is very akin to his inner passion.

“I started Portico Media in 2004, so it’s been around for 15 to 16 years, with the initial core mission to provide more channels to virtual cable operators. To do so, we partnered with big media companies in the US such as NBC Comcast, Viacom and linear TV channels in Taiwan,” Lin recalled.

In 2009, Taiwan was making a transition from analogue to digital. “So starting around 2014, with the company being more financially stable, I decided that I needed to use the influence that I had at that time in the industry to produce and distribute the content that focussed on LGBT programmes. I think there was a big disconnect between what was available then and what was being produced out here in Southeast Asia or Asia. And also in the West,” he said.

And so being in Taiwan, Lin felt like this was something that he could give back to his community first.

“Given that I’m also a part of the LGBTQ community, I can do something about it — but not to an extent where I could jeopardise the financial security of my company. So I started by doing a film festival — a once-a-year event — by bringing in different movies from around the world that I thought were meaningful, impactful or entertaining,” Lin said.

The festivals took off and was distributed in many major cities in the country. Its success motivated Lin to start the first LGBT movie streaming service in Asia, called GagaOOLala, in 2017.

The challenge with Asia

According to Lin, Southeast Asia is one of the most complicated and diverse territories in the world with 12 countries and different languages, historical backgrounds, cultures, religions and different layers of nuances that the company needs to figure out for themselves.

“We also need to account for how all these countries are at different stages of economic development as well as internet stability. We definitely entered from the get-go into one of the most challenging markets in the world. But given that it was so challenging and complicated, the learning curve was definitely very steep. And sooner or later, we found out that there were certain priority markets that we had to focus on,” Lin shared.

Lin added it is now clearer that markets such as the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand are the firm’s key territories. “We don’t need to focus on certain territories where too much advertising or too much buzz can create the opposite effect, attracting too much attention from people who are anti-gay.”

How to become an ally

With ‘Pride Month’, or LGBT History Month, coming to an end in July, we’ve seen many big companies struggling and succeeding in showing what an allyship to LGBTQ community should be like.

“I think we need to start with two layers — one layer is like internal openness to be accepting and embracing people from a different nationality, gender, sexual orientation and religion. I think those kinds of environments are the ones that a startup can thrive in. Because if you are able to create things that are catered to people from different backgrounds and those who have different experiences, they can share with you how to fine-tune or improve like the service or products,” he said.

Lin emphasises that inclusion should be a culture in a tech startup.

“I think in doing so, the employees of that organisation are going to feel vested in the growth of the company and to feel like they are truly a part of the company. And as employees, the sense of belonging will make them work that much harder for the company to succeed,” he said.

“Begin with an open mind and open hearts, because that’s when great ideas, management and leadership can come forth,” he added. “Bear in mind that gay people are or people as well, they’re underrepresented. We have preferences, whereby if you just switch and select the service or part just a little bit, I think you could have a huge impact as a startup.”

Opportunity, not exploitation

As it is still regarded as a highly sensitive matter for some countries in Asia, Southeast Asia in particular, tech startups mostly choose to remain mum on the matter. Next to none of them are participating in any LGBTQ rights campaign, nor are they showing a clear stance from the get-go.

This, to a certain extent, can be seen as a safer move made by most tech startups to avoid ruffling the feathers, especially in countries where there’s no real validation for LGBTQ community’s existence.

On this, Lin shared: “If you genuinely feel like this is something that is underrepresented and underserved and what you offer is ultimately a great service that can enhance the wellness of the LGBT community, I think a lot more products, services and technologies can succeed because right now a lot of people in different parts of the world who are a part of community are still closeted or unwilling to disclose their true identity. But they certainly do have those preferences and they do have those needs.”

Using GagaOOLala as an example, Lin said: “We have been getting subscribers and members from the most intolerant, the most horrific countries in terms of treatment of LGBTQ community. So, it proves that gays are everywhere and also have a need similar to everybody else, which in our case is to consume content that they can thoroughly identify and enjoy.”

A world where having two dads is acceptable

With the media products such as HahaTai, Drama Queen, GagaTai, LalaTai, GagaOOLala, and GOL STUDIOS, it seems like there’s nothing stopping Lin with his mission through Portico Media.

Lin admitted that his fight is not without reason because he is, in fact, is a dad of boys.

“I feel like a sense of responsibility as someone that got them into this world, into a great family, to do all that I can to make sure that I put them in a friendly and loving environment. I hope to embolden them with virtues and strength to fight off all the possible discrimination or the ignorance, as well as potential bullying that they’re going to face in the future. If their daddy can be the great barrier to pave the way for them, maybe with them and also a whole generation of younger LGBTQ, including themselves, can have a better life in the future,” he concluded.
